Spot Guide - Kalifornien
Duckjibe.de

Location
Kalifornien is a neighbouring spot of Heidkate a bit further to the East. It is part of Schoenberger Strand and a sister spot of Brasilien, which is even further east. As in Heidkate and Brasilien, the shore consists of a wide green, a narrow stretch of dunes and sandy beach with stone groins, which separate the  shore in numerous small “bays”.

Although there is a public parking space a bit further away from the dyke, in general parking is very limited at the spot.

You will find a small wind- and kitesurfing school (California Wassersport) at the beach. Some restaurants are along the street, which follows the dyke towards both sides.

The Spot
Once you have managed to carry your gear to the  wide green, rigging is very comfortable on the wide green just next to the spot. The beach is only a few meters away. Follow one of the many paths through the dunes. Make sure not to destroy the grass on top of the dunes as it is part of the shoreline protection.

Watch out for any swimmers in summer time.

Wind & Waves
As the coast faces Northeast, northwesterly and southeasterly winds are sideshore here. Northwesterly and easterly winds are cross onshore and can build some nice small waves, which do break a bit outside at some sandbanks.

Avoiding the groins should be easy as they are far away from each other and can be located from the water quite well even on windy days.

The main waterway for commercial ships and ferries to/from Kiel harbour is already a bit further out at this spot., but you should still make sure to stay far enough away from any ships/wake.

Access
From Kiel follow the 502 towards the East and Schoenberger Strand. Once you have passed Wisch turn in the roundabout towards Kalifornien (K15, third exit) and cross the next roundabout (second exit) to the beach. Follow the street down to the end and the public parking space is on the left side. down the road.
