Portugal - Martinhal

Location
Martinhal is a small bay just next to Sagres (see map). The best way to get to Martinhal is to take the motorway to Lagos, then follow the N125 to Vila do Bispo and further the N268 to Sagres. About 2 km before you reach Sagres, enter a small road to the left, which leads down to Martinhal Bay.

The Spot
Martinhal is a aprox. 2-3km wide sandy and partly rocky bay next to the cliffs of Sagres. The beach lies between the sea and a small, smelly laguna and ends on both sides at colourful cliffs. There is one large rock in the middle of the bay about 200-300m off the beach (see picture).

In the dunes you will find a small cottage with a small bar/restaurant. Starting from May you might also find some windsurf equipment, which is rented out by
the owners of the bar.

Wind
The prevailing wind direction is normally west (off-shore). Therefore Martinhal is mainly known as freeride spot with flat water. During our stay we had eastern winds (on-shore) with about 1m waves. During summer time the thermal warming of the coastline will produce a constant wind.

Accomodation
On the way to the beach you will pass some newly buildt villas, which are mainly sold for permanent residents or as capital investments. However, some of the owners seemed to offer also flats for tourists. In any case you will find a place to stay in Sagres, just a few kilometers further down the main road.

As the bay is just situated next to Sagres do not miss to visit the cliffs and the surf beach `Tonel´. Follow the road to Sao Vicente, the most southwestern tip of Europe and enjoy `The last Bratwurst before America´, if you like to eat German food in Portugal ;-).
